Why table top role playing games?

We don’t just play becasue it’s fun. We play becasue it improves our lives: we get more face to face time with our friends and a good imaginative creative problem solving workout.

For youngsters it can be even more meaningful. Just the other day I was talking to the mom of a nine year old who plays Dungeons and Dragons and she told me this story: “His character scores really high on wisdom and bravery, not so much in strtength and dexterity. He said to me on the drive home from school, “Mom, I was just thinking of my character and he’s so brave. You know…it makes me think I can do brave things too!”

These games do a lot:

They prime students for interdisciplinary learning, including STEM.

They promote creativity.

They enable social connection and belonging…be good for mental health…boost self-efficacy… improve the interpersonal skills…boost resilience.

They have a positive impact on the student experience, social-emotional learning, and academic performance.

They improve mental health.

They promote cognitive and psychosocial skills…prevent negative effects and stress…intervene in psychological problems such as social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and autism spectrum disorders.

They reduce reduce depression, anxiety and stress and (show) significant gains in self-esteem and self-efficacy.
